Spirit Alive ~ Feb. 27th, 2005

As we continue our worship series, "Ordinary Day with Jesus," we will be looking at I Samuel 3:4-10. As well, we will be working to discover the ways in which God communicates with us. As we prepare for worship I encourage you to have a look at, and pray about the Samuel text, then swing back by this page and post some comments regarding your observations, reflections, and questions about the scripture. As well, I would like us to share our experiences and perceptions about how God communicates with us...

  • In what ways have you experienced communication with God?
  • How have you observed others communicating with God?
  • What's the hardest aspect of communicating with God?
  • When is it easy for you to communicate with God?
  • When is it difficult for you to communicate with God?
  • What is an example of a time that you have experienced spiritual growth through communicating with God?
  • What Bible Narratives or characters come to mind when you think about communicating with God?

1 Samuel 3:4-10 (New International Version)

4 Then the LORD called Samuel.

Samuel answered, "Here I am." 5 And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

6 Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

"My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."

7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD : The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

8 The LORD called Samuel a third time, and Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me."

Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, LORD , for your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!"

Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
