The Calhoun's are preparing for a move....

Last Wednesday, Julie and I stepped onto a plane in Wichita and stepped off the plane in Missoula, Montana. The primary purpose of the outing was for an "introductory" meeting with the staff parish ministry team of a congregation that had been discerned for us by the Bishop and cabinet of the Yellowstone Conference of the United Methodist Church. We were greeted by District Superintendent , Rev. Su DeBree, who then drove us about an hour north of Missoula to Polson, Montana. While a good portion of the drive was in the dark, we were glad to be greeted by a few snow flurries as we pulled into town. Our hosts for the two-day excursion were Bob (staff parish chair) and Diane Byers, who invited us to stay at there home on the lake. Polson_4_4_11_08_009 With the anxiety of the next day's meeting on my mind, and  curious thoughts of the town and the scenery consuming my thoughts, I had a hard time sleeping. After surviving the night, we awoke to the illumination of the sun,to the lake, to an island, and to the mountains that filled the window in our room. The sight was amazing. Polson_4_4_11_08_010

Prior to our afternoon meeting, we were able to tour the town, the church, the schools, and some of the neighborhoods. Our morning ended with lunch at a local cafe located in the downtown Polson area, more touring and eventually our introductory meeting at the church in the afternoon. After a few hours of getting to know one another, and a brief time of deliberation, the church folks along with the DS, came to the conclusion that they would indeed like to have me as their new pastor and our family as part of their congregation. The reality of the news was overwhelming, but Julie and I were instantly excited about what the future holds for our family in this incredible town.

Polson, a town of over 4,000 people, is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation in the Northwest corner of Montana. The town sits on the southern edge of Flathead Lake and is surrounded by mountains. Our new church is First United Methodist Church of Polson. Polson_1_4_10_08_038  The church has about 118 members with an average worship attendance of 54. Next year, Polson UMC will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The church moved into a portion of its current building in 1993 and into the sanctuary in 1997. We are extremely excited about the opportunities that await us in Polson, and we are especially excited about the chance to move back to our home region of the country. Please keep our family and the Polson church in your prayers as we both enter into a time of transition. We plan to arrive in Polson around the middle of June.

Here are a few pictures from our trip... Should you ever find yourself in this part of Montana, be sure to stop in and see us... and while you are there, be sure to stop in at one of the greatest stores in the valley...

Video and Paper Share

Yikes!!! I see that I have not posted anything since November... here is a worthwhile topic to break the Blog Silence. Last week our 13 year old wrote this short paper and put a video together for a class project...

Homelessness in Wichita, Kansas by Zach Calhoun

Homelessness has become a big problem in Wichita, Kansas because of tax raises and people not having enough income to live in a home or buy gas and food. There is no way we totally stop homelessness, but we can sure try. Everyone should try to help out homeless people.

Last year I went to a homeless prayer vigil at the downtown library, and it showed me that homeless people don’t get the nicer things in life and that homeless people are having a hard time getting enough food to not die. It was a life changing moment, and now I know how blessed I am just to have food on the table at night.

More and more homeless people are dying because they don’t have enough money to supply food for them or their families. A person is considered homeless if he/she lives in a emergency homeless shelter, transitional housing, cars, parks, sidewalks, abandoned buildings, or the streets. In a 2008 homeless point-in-time count, there were 526 homeless and 89 people were chronically homeless, but remember that they only counted the ones who wanted to be counted, so there could be hundreds or thousands more homeless people.

So many homeless people are dying because they don’t have a place to stay because shelters are full and there are not enough anyway. That’s why we need to build more shelters instead of a downtown arena that cost $140,000,000. So let’s say that to build one homeless shelter, it would cost 2.5 million dollars, so if you divided those two numbers, you could probably build 56 homeless shelters. That’s a lot!

People like the United Methodist Open Door and The Lords Diner are really helping out homeless by giving underpaid and homeless people a nice full meal to eat but they still need volunteers to help out because there are so many homeless people. There are a couple homeless shelters like the Ti’wiconi homeless shelter, and the Inter-Faith homeless shelter, but it is still not enough. Many homeless people are dying because they don’t have a nice warm bed in a nice warm housing facility. They are dying out there in the freezing cold because they freeze to death or they become so sick that they die. People are also dying because they don’t have money to pay for their medical issues. If they are applying for a paying job, they don’t even have a address to use on their appliance papers.

Homelessness has become a big problem in Wichita. Some ways we can help is sending money to The Lords Diner, The United Methodist Open Door, and homeless shelters so that homeless people are able to get off the street and start a new, healthier life where they don’t have to worry if they will have food for themselves or their families.

Great Job Zach!!

The first day of summer...

Memorial day 2006.... This definitely feels like the first day of summer... we slept till we woke up (without the blasted alarm), ate little breakfast, and then Zach, our oldest, and I walked the dog down to the park... great day.... great weather....great conversation... We chatted about all sorts of things... bad eyesight, limo's for sale under 10k, good books, whether or not it will snow this year, swimming, sleepovers, lacrosse... that sort of stuff. No "skool" for me till the China trip in July!!!
